A Global Drug Came from Rapa Nui Soil, and Biology Kept Its Name
Some Chilean words travel without a passport. This one is spoken every day in labs in Boston and Shanghai, and almost nobody who says it knows they are naming a Pacific island. The word is mTOR. It is present in every human cell and it is one of the most studied signaling pathways in contemporary biology. The R at the end comes from rapamycin. And rapamycin is named after Rapa Nui.
mTOR stands for mammalian Target of Rapamycin, today also mechanistic Target of Rapamycin: the kinase that works as the cell's master switch, deciding when it grows and when it stops to recycle its own parts. That is why it shows up in research on cancer, metabolism and aging. Its name reached global nomenclature through a sample of dirt. And that is not the only short world list this island belongs to: in 2024, a study published in Scientific Reports argued that rongorongo, the sign system carved into wood that developed on Rapa Nui, could be the fifth independent invention of writing in human history, alongside Mesopotamia (today Iraq), Egypt, China and Mesoamerica (today Mexico and Guatemala).
The drug's origin is documented in the primary paper, and it is worth telling exactly as it was published. In 1975, The Journal of Antibiotics reported the isolation of a new antifungal produced by a strain of Streptomyces hygroscopicus obtained from an Easter Island soil sample, and the authors named it after the island's Polynesian name. Twenty-four years later, the official FDA label lists 1999 as the year of initial U.S. approval for sirolimus, the generic name of that same compound, indicated to prevent rejection in kidney transplants. What came next is the surprising part: the island never stopped appearing in peer-reviewed journals.

Fifty years separate the first milestone from the last, and three of the five happened within twenty-four months. Between 2024 and 2025, three peer-reviewed studies corrected central pieces of what the world believed about Rapa Nui: when writing first appeared there, what actually happened to its population, and how the statues moved. Extreme Chilean territory producing frontier science already has precedent, because something equivalent happens up north with the desert where the world's astronomy is concentrated. The difference here is that the lab was the soil itself, the wood itself and the DNA itself.
27 Tablets, 15 Genomes and a 4.35-Ton Moai That Walked
Twenty-seven wooden objects of rongorongo survive worldwide. Twenty-seven pieces, and not one of them can be read yet. The team behind the Scientific Reports study radiocarbon dated four of them, and one, tablet D, known as Échancrée, delivered the result that reframed the debate: its wood falls in the 1493 to 1509 range, earlier than European contact with the island. The precision matters more than the headline. What radiocarbon dates is the wood, not the inscription. If the signs are contemporary with the wood they are carved into, the hypothesis the study puts forward holds: rongorongo would be an independent invention of writing, the latest of all known cases. A hypothesis, not an established fact. That nuance is exactly what makes the research serious.

The table sets up a comparison of category and not of chronology, because the study offers no dates for the other four systems: the question is not which came first, but who gets on the list. The four recognized cases have been there for decades and are not in dispute. The fifth row is different and cannot be asserted with the same force, because it is a candidate proposed in 2024 and still under discussion. One more thing separates that row from the other four: the other systems can be read, and rongorongo cannot. Nobody has deciphered it yet.
The second finding touched a story told all over the world with this island as its lead character. For two decades, Rapa Nui served as the textbook case of ecocide, the society that supposedly exhausted its resources and collapsed on its own. In 2024, Nature published the genomes of fifteen ancient Rapanui individuals, with remains radiocarbon dated between 1670 and 1950, and the result was blunt.

The same work delivered a second finding that redraws the Pacific map: ancient and present-day Rapanui carry similar proportions of Native American ancestry, about 10%, and the admixture event is estimated between 1250 and 1430. Centuries before a European ship reached the island in 1722. With that, Rapa Nui stops being the end point of a migration and becomes a node of transpacific navigation. It is the same kind of archaeological and biomolecular evidence that supports the case of the world's oldest mummies, in northern Chile. The contribution here is different: the genes show a community that endured, not one that vanished.
Rapanui oral tradition always said the same thing about the moai: they walked. They were not dragged lying on logs, they moved upright to the ahu, the ceremonial platforms where they end up standing. For decades that version was treated as legend. In 2025, the Journal of Archaeological Science published the experimental validation, with close to 1,000 moai analyzed and three-dimensional modeling, and reached an engineering conclusion: the statue's forward-leaning shape is not an aesthetic trait, it is the transport mechanism. With that principle, the team built a 4.35-ton replica and made it walk.

Eighteen people. That number changes the scale of the problem: no hundreds of workers were needed and no extraordinary explanation either, eighteen with ropes and a coordinated rhythm were enough to move 4.35 tons one hundred meters in forty minutes. What the experiment proves is not strength, it is design. Whoever carved those moai solved the transport before finishing the sculpture, because the transport was built into the shape of the object. And there is a second result, less technical and more striking: oral tradition passed down for generations turned out to be an accurate description of a real procedure.
642 Votes That Protected 579,000 Square Kilometers of Ocean
The institutional layer of this story is as unusual as the scientific one. In September 2017, 642 members of the Rapanui community voted in an indigenous consultation on the future of the sea around the island. 64% approved creating a marine protected area, 62% backed managing it jointly with the State and 78% asked to keep traditional fishing gear. Chile's Ministry of the Environment put the precedent on record: it was the first time an indigenous consultation had been held in the country to create a marine protected area.
That vote produced the AMCP-MU Rapa Nui, a multiple-use coastal marine protected area of 57.9 million hectares, close to 579,000 square kilometers, published in the Official Gazette on 8 June 2018. It allows artisanal fishing, tourism, research and cultural activities, and leaves industrial exploitation out. When it was created, the Ministry of the Environment described it as the largest marine protected area in Latin America. It is the largest surface we have ever protected in a single act, and 642 votes decided it.
On land the proportion is just as strong. Rapa Nui National Park covers 44% of the island's territory and in 1995 became the first Chilean site to enter UNESCO's World Heritage List, ahead of every other place in the country. On 23 November 2017, the State handed its administration to the Ma'u Henua community for 50 renewable years, and CONAF, the national forestry corporation, stopped running it.

Both milestones in the chart happened in the same year and together they describe a change of subject. The Rapanui community was not informed of a decision made in Santiago: it voted on one and received the other. Today, whoever conserves the moai and answers for a World Heritage site is an indigenous community managing its own territory, with a 50-year renewable agreement behind it.
Getting there is an infrastructure question in itself. Mataveri airport runs on a runway that the DGAC, Chile's civil aviation authority, describes as 3,300 meters long, and it sits, according to that same authority, more than 2,500 km from any other airport, which for the DGAC makes it the most remote in the world. The first commercial flight landed on 3 April 1967 with 28 passengers. In 1986, because of its strategic location and low air traffic density, that runway was designated an emergency alternative for space shuttle landings, and a NASA tracking station had already operated on the island until 1975. No shuttle ever landed there. The designation existed anyway, and it explains why the runway is the size it is. A remote territory with access already solved is exactly the advantage behind Chilean adventure tourism, awarded the best in the world.
That island ocean explains a good part of another national figure. In March 2026, the Ministry of the Environment reported that Chile now has 54% of its exclusive economic zone, the strip of sea where a country holds exclusive rights over resources up to 200 nautical miles from its coast, under some form of environmental protection, and that this makes it the fourth country in the world by share of its exclusive economic zone under conservation.

Without the sea around Rapa Nui, that 54% would not exist, and without the 642 votes of September 2017, that protected sea would not exist either. The full chain is tidier than it looks: a soil that produced a global drug, a piece of wood holding a script nobody has managed to read, fifteen genomes that corrected the world, eighteen people who made four and a half tons walk, and a community that decided by vote what to do with almost 600,000 square kilometers of ocean. Chile provided the institutional framework that allowed all of it to be preserved and studied; the Rapanui community provided the decisions. Chile has a word for this kind of thing: bacán, the term we use for something that earns real admiration. The name of this island is spoken today in labs across the planet without anyone noticing, and that, in any language, is being bacán.
