The World’s Oldest Mummies Are In Chile. And They Tell A Story Of Love, Grief And Resilience
We were taught to imagine mummies far away. In Egypt, in pyramids, in pharaohs’ tombs, wrapped in linen and surrounded by gold. The word itself seems to come from there. But the oldest story of human mummification does not begin in the Nile Valley. It begins on the coast of northern Chile, between desert, sea and the dry valleys of Arica and Parinacota. It begins with a community of fishers that had no writing, no palaces and no kings, but did something no civilization had done before: artificially preserve its dead.
The data needs no decoration. The oldest Chinchorro mummies date to around 5,000 BC. The oldest artificial Egyptian mummies appear around 3,000 BC. That means people in Chile were mummifying two thousand years before Egypt. And the difference is not only chronological. While in Egypt mummification became associated for centuries with power, elites and the afterlife of pharaohs and nobles, the Chinchorro mummified everyone: adults, elders, children, babies and fetuses. That is the part that changes the story. In Chile, the earliest known artificial mummification did not begin as privilege. It began as a radical way of refusing to let go.
2.000 years before Egypt, Chile began mummifying its dead
In July 2021, UNESCO inscribed the settlements and artificial mummification of the Chinchorro culture on the World Heritage List. The recognition formalized what archaeology had been showing for decades: in this corner of Chile lies the oldest known record of artificial mummification. But the most moving part is not only the age. It is the question that follows: why would a small community, without state or writing, develop such a complex technique to preserve bodies for thousands of years?
This is not only archaeology. It is one of the oldest signs that human love also tried to defeat disappearance.
Before Egypt, And In A Different Way
The comparison with Egypt works because everyone understands that reference. Egypt turned the mummy into a universal symbol. But Chinchorro forces us to look farther back and closer to home. Instead of a monumental civilization, we find a coastal society of hunters, gatherers and fishers living between southern Peru and northern Chile. Instead of royal tombs, we find small bodies, often infants, treated with a dedication that cannot be explained by technique alone. It is explained by attachment.

The difference between the two traditions does not diminish Egypt. On the contrary, it helps us understand how extraordinary Chinchorro was. Egyptian mummification became part of a vast religious, political and funerary system. Chinchorro mummification emerged much earlier, in a community with no known writing, no monumental architecture and no comparable state hierarchy. That makes the achievement more surprising. In the far north of Chile, a small community developed one of the oldest and most complex funerary technologies known to humanity.
The technique was not simple either. Archaeologists have documented processes that included removing internal organs, cleaning cavities, reinforcing the body with sticks, filling it with plant fibers, clay or sand, rebuilding the bodily shape, sewing the skin and painting the surface. Black mummies used dark pigments associated with manganese; red mummies incorporated ocher. This was not accidental preservation caused by the dry desert climate. It was deliberate human intervention, sustained and transmitted across generations.
The River That Helps Explain The Grief
Recent science proposes a harsh and deeply human answer. The Camarones River, in northern Chile, has extremely high natural arsenic levels. Arsenic is a toxic element that, when consumed over long periods in water, can produce chronic arsenicism: poisoning that affects the skin, internal organs and, especially, reproduction. The World Health Organization recommends a limit of 10 micrograms per liter. In Camarones, levels of up to 1,000 micrograms per liter have been measured, 100 times higher.
That toxicity is not modern. Studies led by Bernardo Arriaza and teams associated with the University of Tarapacá have analyzed hair and remains from Chinchorro mummies, finding evidence compatible with ancient arsenic exposure. The hypothesis suggests that this exposure may have increased miscarriages, stillbirths and infant mortality. Put plainly: a community may have watched too many children die for too long. And faced with that repeated loss, it developed a way to keep them close.

That explanation changes the tone of the discovery. It does not make the Chinchorro mummies a macabre curiosity. It turns them into testimony from a community facing enormous pain. If the earliest bodies were mostly babies and fetuses, mummification can be read as a response to parental grief, a way of continuing to care for those who died too soon. It was not only technique. It was a way of saying: this life mattered.
Arriaza had already proposed this relationship between arsenic, mortality and mummification in earlier research, and recent studies have continued to refine the explanation. Researchers have also observed that some pigments used in black mummies may have exposed the population to manganese, another element with neurological effects. That suggests a living practice, one that changed over time: the Chinchorro did not repeat a frozen formula, but adjusted materials, styles and procedures over centuries.
A Human Work Chile Must Look At Directly
To date, around 300 Chinchorro mummies have been recovered in different states of preservation, distributed across archaeological sites on the northern coast of Chile and southern Peru. The Archaeological Museum of the University of Tarapacá, in Arica, plays a central role as repository, research space and bridge between heritage, science and the local community. The UNESCO inscription protects sites associated with Chinchorro culture in Arica and the Camarones valley, places where history is not stored in distant display cases, but buried in the territory itself.
There is something powerful in the fact that this heritage is in Chile. Not because this should become an antiquity contest to beat Egypt in trivia. That would miss the point. What matters is that it expands the mental map of ancient humanity. Before the pyramids, before the pharaohs, before many stories that usually occupy the center of the world’s imagination, a community on the South Pacific was already developing a sophisticated way of treating its dead.
That shift in the map matters for Chilean science too. The Chinchorro mummies are not a treasure discovered once and then frozen forever. They continue to raise questions about health, environment, funerary techniques, diet, migration, childhood and human adaptation under extreme conditions. Each new analysis of hair, pigment, bone or burial context can adjust what we know about a culture that left no written texts, but did leave bodies worked with a precision that still demands research. In that sense, northern Chile does not only preserve heritage: it produces knowledge about the origins of a universal human behavior.
It also forces us to look at northern Chile differently. Arica and Parinacota are not only border, desert, beach or extreme landscape. They are territory of very deep human memory. In their valleys and coasts, evidence remains of a question that still defines us: what do we do with those we love when they die? The Chinchorro answered with their hands, with pigments, with fibers, with wood, with clay, with patience. And that answer crossed 3,500 years of continuous practice.
The word “bacán” may sound light next to such a delicate story, but here it carries another weight. It does not celebrate death. It celebrates the fact that Chile holds very early proof of human sensitivity, technical knowledge and community. It celebrates that this country preserves something that does not belong only to Chile, but that Chile has the responsibility to protect: one of the earliest signs that human beings wanted to preserve their loved ones because losing them was too much. The Chinchorro mummies are 2,000 years older than Egypt’s, they were born from a community that turned grief into memory, and that is more than enough reason to feel bacán.
