Chile Holds the World's Largest Copper Reserves: 180 of the World's 980 Million Tonnes
Some kinds of wealth are measured by what comes out. This one is measured by what is left. In 2025, Chile's copper production reached 5.3 million tonnes, close to a quarter of all the copper mined on the planet that year. One in every four kilos. It is the credential we repeat almost from memory, the one that shows up in school textbooks and in any conversation about the Chilean economy, and it is also the least interesting part of this story.
The table that settles the matter is published every year by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) in its Mineral Commodity Summaries report, which measures every country with the same yardstick: mined copper, meaning the metal contained in the ore that comes out of the deposit, before it is smelted and refined. In the 2026 edition, with 2025 figures, the order reads like this: Chile with 5.3 million tonnes, the Democratic Republic of the Congo with 3.2, Peru with 2.7 and the United States with 1.0, against a world total of around 23 million. The gap with second place is roughly 1.7 times. Put another way, we produce more than the second and more than the third, each one taken separately.

The chart shows something loose figures hide: the copper podium is not crowded. Between first and second there are 2.1 million tonnes of difference, more than twice everything the United States mines in a year. That lead is not the result of one good year or a favorable cycle, because it rests on operations that have been running in the same place for more than a century. So far, all of this is what you would expect from a mining country. The twist comes now.
The Country That Mines the Most Copper Also Has the Most Left Underground
The same USGS report carries a second table almost nobody looks at, the reserves table. In that language, a reserve is not all the copper sitting underground: it is the portion that can be extracted today with available technology and at a cost that makes economic sense. It is a conservative definition, revised country by country every year, and that is why the figure lands hard. Of the roughly 980 million tonnes of copper the world holds in reserves, some 180 million are in Chile. No other country holds more. Much of that metal sleeps under the same northern desert that gave us close to 40% of the world's astronomical capacity.

That 18% is the number that changes the conversation. In mining, the usual pattern is that the country extracting the most is not the one with the most still stored away, because extracting at scale is the fastest way to run out of things to extract. Chile occupies both boxes at once. We mine as if copper were in surplus, and we still have a surplus. There is a Chilean word for a fact like that: bacán, the word we use for something that earns your admiration.
Why that combination matters becomes clear when you look outward. The International Energy Agency, the body that tracks the energy transition country by country, calculated in its Global Critical Minerals Outlook 2025 how much copper the world will ask for over the next two decades for power grids, transport and energy storage. The answer comes in two numbers, and they point in opposite directions.

A third more demand and a third less committed supply. In that setting, holding the largest reserves on the planet stops being an encyclopedia entry and becomes a position. The official projection points the same way: Cochilco, the Chilean Copper Commission and the public agency that keeps the books on Chilean copper, estimates on the basis of the current investment portfolio that our share of world production would go from 23.6% in 2024 to 27.3% in 2034. It is worth saying precisely: that is a projection, not a fact, and it depends on those projects being built. This story does not lean on it. It leans on what has already been measured.
A 104-Year Open Pit and Water Hauled from the Sea in the World's Driest Desert
Reserves are a number in a table until someone digs them out. And digging them out demands a scale of work that is hard to picture from the sidewalk: mountains of rock moved, decades of planning and decisions made with an eye on how the operation will run forty years from now. Chuquicamata, in Calama, is the clearest example we have. It is the largest open-pit copper mine of its kind in the world, and it ran in the open air for 104 straight years, until August 2019, when it became an underground mine.

One hundred and four years is a rare span for any industrial activity. The operation did not close when the pit reached its limit: it changed shape. Codelco, the Chilean state-owned company that runs the mine, converted it to underground work to keep reaching ore the pit could no longer take, and its reserves project at least four more decades of operation. That horizon, measured in generations rather than quarters, is the same one we have used on other big problems, such as the seismic code that keeps buildings standing after every earthquake.
The second problem is not rock: it is water. Copper mining operates in the north, in the driest desert in the world, and the Chilean answer was to go get water from the only place where there is plenty of it. According to Cochilco's water demand projection report, total consumption in the sector goes from 18.5 cubic meters per second in 2024 to 20.6 in 2034, moderate growth of around 1.2% a year (each cubic meter is a thousand liters). What really changes is not how much water is used, but where it comes from: consumption from continental sources would fall from 10.9 to 6.7 cubic meters per second, almost 40% less in a decade.
The figure that sums up the shift is the share. In 2024, 40.7% of the water used by Chilean copper mining came from the sea. Cochilco's projection takes it to 67.6% by 2034, with close to three quarters of that seawater desalinated before it enters the process.

Two points, ten years, almost twenty-seven percentage points of difference. The line shows an entire industry changing its water source within a single decade, and that does not happen on good intentions: it happens with desalination plants, pumping systems and kilometers of pipeline that have to be built long before they are needed. That is the point of this whole section. Reserves turn into production only when the engineering exists to pull them out where it almost never rains.
Almost 6 of Every 10 Dollars We Export Come Out of the Ground
All of the above lands in one place, which is the country's cash register. In 2025 we exported goods worth US$107,004 million, the highest figure in our history according to the Undersecretariat for International Economic Relations (SUBREI), with data from the Central Bank and the National Customs Service. Of that total, mining contributed US$63,253 million.

59.1% is said quickly and understood slowly: almost 6 of every 10 dollars that enter the country from selling goods came out of a deposit first. Copper concentrates alone, the format in which most of the mineral is shipped, added up to US$36,278 million. And part of it goes straight into the public budget: Codelco closed 2025 with 1,334,445 metric tonnes of fine copper of its own production, meaning the pure metal contained once the rock is discounted, plus a contribution to the Treasury of US$1,778 million. That mix of natural resources and accountable institutions is the same thing the world recognizes at other counters, as when we travel with the passport that enters 174 destinations without a visa.
None of this is explained by geological luck. The copper was here before we were and it will be here after; what we built around it was a system able to use it and to last: engineers trained in Chilean universities, a state-owned company that publishes its results, a public agency that measures and projects output a decade ahead, and operations planning for 2060 while they run 2026. We are the country that mines the most copper in the world and also the one with the most left, precisely when the planet is going to need a third more. Geology supplied the mineral. We supplied the rest, and when the data speaks this clearly, there is only one thing left to say: we are bacán.
