Valparaíso Has the World's Fastest Fixed Internet
It is almost a national reflex. A work video call freezes on us, and the excuse arrives on its own: "the wifi at home," "the phone company," "that awful router." Memes about slow Chilean internet circulate with the same ease as jokes about Santiago traffic or its hazy August sky. It is part of the daily complaint folklore, a habit so ingrained that almost nobody stops to check it against actual data. The problem is that, measured with instruments instead of mood, internet speed in Chile does not match that complaint.
According to Ookla, the company behind Speedtest, the tool millions of people around the world use to measure their own connection, reality looks different. Its Speedtest Global Index ranked Valparaíso as the city with the fastest fixed internet on the planet in June 2026, with a median download speed of 425.84 megabits per second (Mbps), the unit that measures how much data a connection can receive every second. The list is not topped by Singapore or Seoul or any of the tech capitals one would guess first. It is topped by a port city of steep hills, century old funiculars and tin houses painted in every color, ahead of Abu Dhabi, in the United Arab Emirates, at 399.92 Mbps, and Lyon, in France, at 348.11 Mbps.

The finding is surprising precisely because it breaks the expected script. Global internet speed rankings usually reward small, wealthy city states with networks built from scratch in the last decade and budgets few countries can match. Valparaíso does not fit that mold. It has around 300,000 residents, difficult terrain, hills that climb at angles no telecom engineer would choose, and an urban layout more than a century and a half old. That this particular place came out on top of a global ranking is not a fun fact for dinner conversation. It is a sign that something was done right at a scale far larger than a single city. For anyone working remotely, billing in dollars, or coordinating meetings across time zones, that speed is not a decorative statistic. It is the difference between competing on equal footing and falling one step behind.
The Country Behind One City's Record
Valparaíso did not win alone. Behind its record sits a national policy sustained for more than a decade: extending fiber to the home, the technology known as FTTH, across the entire territory, not just in wealthier neighborhoods. According to the 2025 year end telecommunications sector report from Chile's Undersecretariat of Telecommunications (Subtel), fiber optics already account for 84.1 percent of all fixed connections in the country as of January 2026. Nearly 7 out of 10 households with fixed internet now browse at speeds between 500 and 1,000 Mbps, a range that a decade ago belonged almost exclusively to university labs or corporate data centers.

That percentage is not a technical footnote. It is the reason a single city could go this far.
That infrastructure achievement, on top of everything else, did not arrive with a steep price tag. Quite the opposite. According to a JP Morgan study cited by Subtel, Chile has the cheapest fixed internet in all of Latin America: US$3.12 per 100 Mbps of contracted speed. Colombia pays US$4.23 for the same standard, Brazil US$4.66, Peru US$5.91 and Argentina US$8.34, almost three times what Chile pays.
The same Subtel release that reports this price also notes a parallel milestone: Chile surpassed 10 million 5G connections, confirming that network investment did not stop at fixed fiber but advanced in mobile telephony at the same time.

The chart shows something that rarely happens in telecommunications: speed and price moving in the same favorable direction instead of trading off against each other. In many markets, a fast network is shorthand for a high bill, reserved for whoever can afford it. In Chile, the combination of competition among carriers, wide fiber coverage and an active public connectivity policy produced the opposite outcome: the fastest city in the world, sustained by one of the cheapest broadband markets in the region.
Nobody chose Valparaíso as the fastest city on Earth out of sympathy. The data chose it, measured millions of times by users themselves, not by a jury or a country branding campaign.
Why the South Beats the Capital
If fiber were only a capital city privilege, the story would end in Santiago. It does not. The monthly fixed internet speed ranking published by Subtel and the Independent Technical Organization (OTI), built on more than 750,000 real user measurements recorded in January 2026, placed the Los Lagos region in first place nationwide, with an average download speed of 776.5 Mbps. Ñuble follows with 770.7 Mbps, then Biobío with 765.2 Mbps.

The Metropolitan Region, home to more than 7 million people and the country's historically largest concentration of infrastructure, does not lead in any of the categories measured: at least five regions beat it on download speed. It is a counterintuitive result and, at the same time, good news wearing the disguise of a surprise. It means fiber expansion in Chile did not stop at Santiago's outer ring road. It reached Puerto Montt, Chillán and Concepción with enough force to outpace the capital on the measurement that matters most to any user: real speed, measured from their own router. Internet speed in Chile stopped being a map of geographic privilege concentrated in one place. The result also says something about how investment was distributed: it did not simply follow population density. It followed the logic of replacing old copper networks with fiber wherever terrain and demand allowed it, even far from the Metropolitan Region.
The Cable That Redraws the Map for Chile
The fiber already in the ground explains the present. The next chapter is being built under the ocean. Through the state agency Desarrollo País, Chile partnered with Google to create Humboldt Connect, the joint venture in charge of installing the first submarine fiber optic cable to connect South America directly with Asia and Oceania. The full system totals roughly 21,000 kilometers of cable across two routes; one of them will run about 14,800 kilometers between the town of Santo Domingo, in the Valparaíso region, and Sydney, Australia.

Today, almost all data traffic between South America and Asia first passes through the United States or Europe, adding thousands of unnecessary kilometers and milliseconds of latency. The Humboldt Cable, with a projected capacity of 144 terabits per second, removes that detour. Installation is scheduled for late 2026, and the system is expected to become operational in 2028. When it does, Chile will stop being the dead end of the world's data network, the last stop at the bottom of the map, and become South America's gateway to the Pacific instead.
The lead is not limited to download speed either. Upload speed, the one that decides whether a video call freezes or a work file takes seconds instead of minutes, tells the same story.

Chile tops South America on that front too, averaging 276.5 Mbps between January and May 2026, nearly 55 Mbps ahead of Peru and more than double Colombia's average, according to measurements from the firm nPerf.
None of this happened by accident or overnight. A city of steep hills and heritage buildings ended up with the fastest fixed internet on the planet. A country built a fiber network that now reaches nearly 7 out of 10 households at gigabit speeds, charging less than every one of its neighbors, the product of more than a decade of sustained investment. And now it is preparing to lay, with its own cable, the first direct digital bridge between South America and Asia Pacific. None of these three achievements, the city, the price, the cable, depends on a single actor. They are the sum of sustained public policy, real competition among carriers, and a geography that, for once, was not an obstacle but an excuse to build better. The next time a video call drops, it is probably not the country's fault. And if Chile got anything wrong here, it was not telling this story sooner, because building something like this is not an accident: it is Chile being bacán.
