Santiago's Metro: Latin America's 2nd-Largest Network, Beaten Only By Mexico City
São Paulo has 13 lines and nearly 23 million people in its metropolitan area. Buenos Aires has the region's oldest network, opened in 1913. Bogotá has no metro at all: its mass transit system is a bus rapid transit network running on dedicated lanes. And Mexico City, with 12 lines and 226 stations, runs the largest metro network anywhere in Latin America. Right behind it, in second place, is Santiago's Metro: 149 kilometers of track, 143 stations, and seven lines covering the largest network of any metro system in South America.
That is not a minor detail in a region where most cities solved mass mobility with informal buses, BRT systems, or networks that haven't expanded in decades. Santiago's metropolitan population is roughly 7 million people, several times smaller than São Paulo's or Mexico City's, and it still built the continent's second-largest network. City size doesn't explain network size: five decades of sustained investment policy does.
The network now carries more than 2.2 million passengers on an average weekday according to the latest official 2025 figures, a number comparable to the entire population of several Latin American capitals moving through a single system every day. Its all-time annual ridership record came in 2018, when it carried over 721 million passengers in twelve months, before the pandemic reshaped urban mobility patterns across the region.

Five decades of one consistent decision
Santiago's Metro carried its first passengers on September 15, 1975, with a single line and seven stations. Fifty years later, in September 2025, the system marked half a century of uninterrupted operation with a workforce of more than 4,600 people. Line 3, opened in 2019, and Line 6, opened in 2017, represent the most recent transformation: both are fully automatic, driverless, with an operational architecture that didn't exist on the classic lines built in the 1970s and 1980s.
That expansion hasn't stopped. The southern extension of Line 2 to Hospital El Pino, opened in 2025, improved coverage of the capital's southern sector. Line 7 is projected to enter operation by 2028, and by 2030 the system would add Line 8 and the first stretch of Line 9. Metro S.A.'s expansion plan aims for Santiago to have the most extensive network in all of Latin America by 2033, surpassing even Mexico City, benefiting an estimated 7 million people.
Building that network wasn't only a matter of budget. Chile concentrates a significant share of global seismic activity, and every tunnel, station, and elevated viaduct had to be designed under the same seismic logic that protects surface buildings. Underground stations require structural behavior different from a conventional building: they must resist surrounding ground motion without transmitting that vibration destructively into the tunnel structure. The city also sits in a valley with heterogeneous subsoil, which forced Metro S.A. to use tunnel boring machines in stable rock sectors and more conservative excavation methods near the Mapocho River. Line 6, opened in 2017 with fully automatic stations, was the first major construction effort under the generation of seismic standards following the 2010 earthquake, which explains why its structural architecture looks visibly different from the classic lines built in the 1970s. Since 2022, the system has also run on 100% renewable energy, making it the first metro in Latin America to achieve carbon neutrality in its daily operations.

A city of 7 million people with the continent's second-largest metro network isn't geographic coincidence. It's proof that public transit investment, sustained for 50 years across governments of different political stripes, doesn't stop when the administration changes.
Why punctuality matters more than size
A network's size says little if the trains don't run on time. To measure that, there's COMET (Community of Metros), an international benchmarking group bringing together 45 metro systems from 42 cities worldwide, from Tokyo to London, from New York to Hong Kong. According to the most recent COMET report, Santiago's Metro ranks seventh worldwide in frequency regularity, meaning the consistency with which trains meet the promised interval between one and the next.

Placing in the top 7 of 45 evaluated systems, competing against networks from cities that have operated for over a century with budgets several times larger, is no small result for a Latin American network. In 2012, Santiago's Metro was chosen as the best metro system in the Americas at the annual Metro Rail dinner in London. A decade later, in 2023, it received the Global Accessibility Award from the International Association of Public Transport (UITP), recognizing the work of installing elevators and tactile paths across the network in compliance with the 2016 Inclusion Law. The system now carries more than 2.2 million passengers on an average weekday, with an all-time record of 2,951,962 people in a single day, set in May 2019.
What this set of data shows is that Santiago's Metro didn't compete only to be large. It competed to be reliable, accessible, and consistent, in a region where those three qualities rarely coexist in the same public transit system. Fifty years, seven lines, 143 stations, and a place among the seven most punctual metros on the planet prove this was built through sustained work, not luck, which is exactly why we are bacán.
